Albuquerque Museum will open the doors to a very special exhibition on Sunday, May 16 when the works of famed Impressionists like Renoir, Manet, Cézanne, van Gogh, Pissarro and Monet will be on display.
The exhibition, entitled Turner to Cézanne, features a total of 59 stunning works, many by artists who defined the revolutionary style developed in the mid-1800s. The collection is from National Museum Wales, known for having one of the finest Impressionist art collections in Europe. Assembled between 1908 and 1923 by sisters Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, the on-loan collection includes masterpieces by both well-known and lesser-known, exceptional, artists from that period. Highlights include Renoir’s famous La Parisienne, which was included in the first show of Impressionism in 1874, a Monet Water Lilies, and van Gogh’s panoramic Rain-Auvers, painted during the last week of the artist’s life. Equally stunning, but perhaps less well-known by American audiences, are works by artists such as Turner, Corot, Daumier, Millet, and Berthe Morisot.
The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, 2000 Mountain Road NW in Old Town, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission: Adult $4.00 ($3.00 for Adult New Mexico resident with valid ID); seniors (65+) $2.00; ages 4 - 12, $1.00; 3 and under free. Due to the special nature of this exhibition, a fee of $5.00 per person will be in effect, in addition to the regular admission fee. Admission is free every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and all day on the first Wednesday of every month, with the special $5.00 fee to view Turner to Cézanne.

UNM Opera Theatre presents LE CONVENIENZE ED INCONVENIENZE TEATRALI (Theatrical Customs Good and Bad or The Conveniences and Inconveniences of the Theatre). Book and Music by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). Join the UNM Opera Theatre in a hilarious fully staged romp with an Italian opera company. Experience theatrical customs, good and bad with rollicking coloratura and typical Donizetti flourishes. The opera is a broad farce. The opera pokes fun at a rehearsal of an Opera Seria by a provincial Italian touring company. We will meet the harried impresario, the victimized composer, the capricious prima donna, her pretentious father, as well as the formidable Mama Agata, mother of the seconda donna. The opera will be sung in Italian with spoken dialogue in English, by the emerging young artists of UNM Opera Theatre. Bring your opera glasses and good spirits to an unconventional opera rehearsal in Keller Hall. Directed by Marilyn Tyler.

Cuban art, while shown internationally, is relatively unknown inside the United States due to trade sanctions since the early 1960’s. Confluencias II: Inside Arte Cubano Contemporáneo reveals a new dialogue within the Cuban/United States cultural front by bringing together an exciting overview of the work of over 40 contemporary Cuban artists. The exhibition will introduce contemporary mixed media, painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, and video-art installations. The artists explore the complexity of the Cuban experience, exploring such themes as Afro-Cuban mythology, collectivity, and the affects of a globalized world on creativity and communication.
Stuart Ashman, Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Cultural Affairs states, "It is clear from the work in this exhibition that art is a universal language that crosses all barriers. It is our hope that efforts such as this one will foster a deeper understanding between the peoples of Cuba and the United States.”
