The Albuquerque International Association is pleased to announce that its next Global Discussion Dinner will focus on the U.S. Military Intervention in Venezuela and is planned for Wednesday, May 6th from 6 to 8 pm at D.H. Lescombes, a gourmet restaurant and winery in the Old Town area.

Les Combes restaurant

The dinner will be held at D.H. Lescombes, a gourmet restaurant and winery in the Old Town area.

The discussion will be moderated by Mark Peceny, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1992. He teaches a variety of courses in international relations, comparative politics, and American foreign policy. His research focuses on democracy, dictatorship, and the international system, both on how political regimes shape the foreign policies of states and on how international actors shape processes of democratization and autocratization within states. He served as Chair of the Department of Political Science from 2005-2011 and as Dean of UNM’s College of Arts and Sciences from 2011-2021.

On January 3, 2026, U.S. forces executed a targeted military intervention in Venezuela that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores and their incarceration in New York to await trial in U.S. courts. Our conversation at dinner will examine both why the U.S. launched this military intervention and how this intervention will shape the future of Venezuelan politics. We will also reflect on what this intervention tells us about the evolution of America’s role in the world.

D.H. Lescombes is located at 901 Rio Grande Blvd NW and has a diverse menu featuring delicious entrees prepared by its master chefs, along with wines honoring the family’s wine making heritage. The discussion dinner will take place in a warm and inviting private dining room at the restaurant specially reserved for the event. All individuals attending will order from the restaurant’s menu and pay separately for their meals and drinks and gratuity.

The dinner will be limited to 20 participants. If you are interested in attending, please register online by Monday, May 4 and you will receive a confirmation email.
